Canonical lays out a different kind of plan for AI.

4 months ago, Jon Seager (VP of Engineering) has laid out a road map for AI usage at the overall company and their Linux distribution, Ubuntu, but they want to do "a cautious and responsible approach", according to the Tom's Hardware article, regarding this topic.

Since the company is doing just that, they are well aware of the slop submissions, which people have been publishing onto FOSS projects for nearly 4 or 3 years and want contributors (alongside the member of staff) to be sceptical of what the LLM generates, not blindly trust it or something like that.

Starting from version 26.10 (Stonking Stingray), these features will be implemented and strictly be opt-in, because they really don't want to shove it down our throat, but instead introduce the technology, where it meaningfully improves certain things, like functionality.

Debian has decided upon the usage of gen AI, through a vote.

Now, what happened at one of the oldest distros in the world, feels like the exact opposite of what approach Canonical are taking, IMO.

Because 600 out of a couple thousand staff have just voted to not banish generative AI code and so, the foundation behind it had greenlit it, but they've placed responsibility onto the contributor from what I've read, hence the option that won being labeled as "Responsible Use".

In which the reactions are mixed, quite like the previous topic above this one, on places like The Register and it got so awkward to the point where Antoine had announced his retirement from the project on a Debian list as a response to the whole AI situation.

KDE made a similar decision to Debian, except it's a much worse one for the anti-AI crowd...

As of 21st of September, It has come to my attention that KDE has gone all in to include pro-AI contributions (preferably ones that are created using corporate LLMs, according to a post comment) and will not accept any of the suggestion for it to be disclosed, according to a Lemmy post that I've found on the interwebs.

It got so bad to the point, where they blocked David Gerad on what appears to be a Mastodon instance, after he questioned their decision to give an AI generated project a green light at the Akademy 2026 conference, in which it looks like a majority of the developers have hopped onto the AI hype train...

I wonder how many more contributors, users and developers will quit the project over this choice?

P.S. I found out that a paid developer of XFCE has came under fire, regarding his usage of AI/LLMs, whilst working on Wayland, via that post and a DuckDuckGo search result of a Tweet, I shall not link, because most people despise that website.
